English students at the American Center celebrated Valentine’s Day this year in style, with a love poem competition and traditional games featuring themes from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

5 MarCritical Thinking and Literary Analysis Training
5 MarPeace Corps Volunteers conducted a four-day training on critical thinking and literary analysis for university English teachers at Naryn State University, January 9th to 12th, 2012. Teachers read poems by William Blake and Emily Dickinson, and wrote critical essays based on close readings of the texts.
Holiday Party Madness!!!
11 JanOn December 24th, students stopped by the American Center for our annual holiday party. Activities included a butter-beard competition (where two teams raced to make the best Santa beard using only butter and shredded paper:), a holiday-themed fashion show, a caroling competition, a short history of Christmas and more! International Education Week…Hooray!
15 NovNovember 14-18th is International Education Week at the American Center. Sponsored by EducationUSA, the event features a series of seminars presented by NSU’s international departments, including the Korean, Chinese, Japanese, German, Arabic and American Centers. Students will be learning about leadership, democracy, cultural traditions and much more. The seminars are organized by a FLEX Alum and NSU’s EducationUSA coordinator.
Halloween Disco and Costume Contest!
6 NovHalloween might be over, but at the American Center the monsters and ghouls are still on the prowl. This Saturday, we held our first ever Halloween disco and costume contest, and the students stepped up with some rockin’ duds.

Peace Corps Volunteers taught students about the origins of the holiday, how it’s celebrated in America and easy ways to make wicked costumes (in preparation for this weekend’s Costume Disco).
